HOMOCHIC PRESENTS BURNING MARYS BURNING MAN 2008
SUPREMACY: THE WHITE PARTY
Burning Man is the legendary arts festival held in the Nevada Desert every summer for the last 20 years. BURNING MARYS was Homochic’s 2008 50 person camp located in the coveted spot of Center Camp and a prominent representation of Burning Man’s gay community. Burning Mary was built on the foundations of Piss Clear, Burning Man’s only alternative newspaper, created by Adrian Roberts (bootieusa.com). When the newspaper and camp ended its 10-year history, the camp was inherited by its mostly gay members and Burning Marys was created. Burning Marys was given the much-coveted placement of center camp and became a very prominent representation of Burning Man’s gay community. Creating a camp structure out of scratch became the most frustrating of miracles. Everything from purchasing a sound system that would wreck in the sandstorms to designing an entire dome structure, became an 8 month logistic endevour and became one of the most rewarding experiences of the year.
SUPREMACY: THE WHITE PARTY
The main contribution of the the camp was SUPREMACY: THE WHITE PARTY, a dance party that was both a spoof on gay circuit parties as well as a riff on the theme of 2008 Burning Man, the much criticized and lampooned “AMERICAN DREAM”. The event was be a combination of costume, multimedia and the best disco and electro music heard on the playa. Attendees were encouraged to “dress as their oppressor”, a dress code that yielded everything from priests to SS officers to aerobics instructors.
As with all Homochic productions, the fundraisers and Supremacy event combined an aggressive online campaign featuring video, projections, a premium selection of DJ’s and costumes; Allan Herrera created ten KKK outfits to greet guests at the Supremacy party. The MARY Homochic+Burning Mary’s fundraiser, held in an underground space on Pride Friday became Homochic’s most successfull event to date.
